What is Cupping Therapy/What are the benefits?
The form of cupping therapy utilized is Fascial Cupping therapy for soft tissue release/mobilization. It is a form of manual therapy. It is used to treat pain including back pain, neck pain, general musculoskeletal pain, muscle tightness/tension, stiff joints/muscles, improve range of motion, relieve pain from trigger points, and improve muscle and fascial mobility. The suction and negative pressure effects from the cups can relieve tension in muscles, encourage blood flow, improve range of motion, and sedate the nervous system. It has been shown to be of benefit with chronic pain and chronic stress.
Dr. Chiti Parikh, M.D. of Weill Cornell Medicine Integrative Health and Wellbeing Center in New York City says in an article in Women’s Health magazine,
“When people are suffering from physical pain, that means inflammation has increased locally in that area. Cupping, then, improves blood circulation in that area by attracting immune cells to that location to increase the repair and recovery process, so that the swelling can go down.”
If you are interested in cupping therapy for soft tissue release/mobilization, I still require an initial assessment ($85) to identify areas of restrictions, dysfunctional movement patterns, and ensure we are addressing all areas that may be affecting your pain/movement pattern. This can also be utilized as maintenance/preventative.
Cupping therapy will be performed as needed during initial evaluation
Therapeutic exercise as necessary will be utilized and given as home program directed towards patient’s impairments/functional limitations to facilitate proper movement following cupping therapy.
Follow-up appointments to include cupping therapy:
$50 for 45-minute sessions
Includes cupping therapy + therapeutic/corrective exercise/home program
5-pack of cupping therapy sessions (includes initial assessment + 4 follow-up sessions): $235 ($285 value)
All patients interested in cupping therapy for soft tissue release/mobilization at the initial assessment will be required to fill out a waiver/informed consent form prior to initiating cupping therapy!
**Something to keep in mind → The cups may leave medium to large sized marks that look like bruises on the skin that can last anywhere from a few hours to a couple weeks depending on the person. The color of the marks varies from person to person. The marks are actually metabolic waste and toxins that are pulled to the surface of the skin to be cleared by the lymphatic and circulatory systems to facilitate healing.
**You will want to steer clear of cupping if you are on blood thinners, have trouble with bleeding or clotting, have really sensitive/thin skin, or have an open wound. It can be performed over surgical wounds, once fully healed and cleared by physician/surgeon.
